Bronze Age jewellery discovery is treasure

THE finder of a piece of Bronze Age jewellery will receive a financial reward for their discovery following a coroner’s ruling.

Suffolk Coroner Dr Peter Dean ruled that a gold bead found near Clare on November 7, 2011 is classed as treasure, and therefore the finder will be entitled to a sum of money from its sale.

Andrew Brown, from the Suffolk County Council archaeological team, told a treasure trove inquest held at the Active Business Centre in Bury St Edmunds on Friday that the bead is ‘probably of bronze age and dates between 2,000 BC and 800 BC.’

He added: “It is an indicator of fairly high status, so they are a little bit unusual.

“Occasionally they turn up in a variety of contexts, sometimes burial and things like that.”
