Call for volunteers to join Norton archaeology henge dig

THE chairman of an archaeology group is calling on people to take advantage of a “unique opportunity” to explore a 5,000-year-old henge site.

Chris Hobbs from the Norton Community Archaeology Group (NCAG) has organised a training dig at a Neolithic henge site to the east of Norton from April 6 to 9.

The chairman is keen for volunteers to come forward for the dig on a site which archeology expert Anne Teather from the University of Chester declared was potentially a site of “national significance” during a visit to Stapleton’s Field in January.

The henge was uncovered in summer 2010 by NCAG, and since then animal bones, flint and ceramics have been discovered.

Funding from the Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation and the National Lottery has allowed a geophysics survey to be undertaken, which began in February and continues until May. Following the training day over Easter, a summer dig between July and August will also be held.
