A cavers’ expedition has discovered the world’s oldest man-made dam in the Krasnodar region in southern Russia.

This will prompt us to review mankind’s discoveries. The dam was built over 10,000 years ago. Earlier, it was believed that the first dam was built about 4,500 years ago.

The cavers of the Russian Geographical Society (RGS) discovered a unique clay banks in a cave in the Krasnodar region. Scientists believe that these are man-made dams of the Neolithic era. These hydro-engineering structures were built to collect water dripping on the cave’s walls.

Head of the TGS cavers’ unit Vyacheslav Isaev said that samples of soil were taken and analyzed at the Geology Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The results confirmed that the banks were artificially made. Scientists also determined the age of the dam which is over 10,000 years. This means that this is the world’s oldest dam, and we will have to rewrite mankind’s history.

Earlier, specialists attributed the construction of dams to Egyptians. It was believed that the first hydro-engineering construction was made on River Nile about 4,500 years ago. It seems now that these dams were made much earlier. At present, the cave in Krasnodar region has been named Plotinnaya.

After studying the dam scientists proposed a hypothesis: during the late Neolithic era, people liked to go on hunting in these places. They discovered water in a cave and built dams that helped them to accumulate water in an accessible and safe place.

The caves of prehistoric people were discovered over 30 years ago. In the early 1980s, scientists discovered ceramic pots that were made before the invention of the potter’s wheel in the Plotinnaya cave.

Vyacheslav Isaev who headed the expedition says: “when the cavers received advanced LED lamps we felt that we studied some other caves in the 1980s. At present, we see them in a different way and started discovering things that were unnoticeable those days.”  indian.ruvr.ru
